Being centered in the heart of Shenandoah Valley at James Madison University, I have found the most relaxing scenery, heartwarming culture, and vibrant nature views. These locations and the trips I’ve taken to discover them have been the basis for unforgettable memories that will last a lifetime. Here are some quick looks at some of the best-kept secret locations that make Harrisonburg and its surrounding area so special.

Switzer Lake

It only took until my last year of four to discover Switzer Lake. Driving Northwest on route 33 from Harrisonburg will take you straight to this gorgeous lake and campsite. My closest friends and I have spent a couple days beside this lake making fires, s’mores, and spending quality time together. The entrance to this gem is rocky and has rough terrain, so be prepared! But the rough ride is absolutely worth every second being completely surrounded by nature. If you love camping and the outdoors, Switzer lake is the perfect getaway for you!

Showalter’s Orchard & Greenhouse

Nestled in Rockingham County, Showalter’s Orchard is by far the best apple picking orchard and mountain view experience. Their family-owned and operated orchard, cidery, farm stay, and event venue proves to create valuable memories for everyone of all ages. Not to mention, their apple cider is hands down the top on my list! While here, my closest friends and I enjoyed cider tasting, picking different varieties of apples, and overall the community and energy that the orchard has. Showalter’s is one place I will continue to visit yearly from its vibrancy and all of the adventures it offers.

Harvest Hill Farm

Located only fifteen minutes down the road from Showalter’s is this small, local pumpkin patch. Harvest Hill Farm operates only on weekends and is run as a passion project or creative pursuit. This pumpkin patch offers a corn maze, pumpkin and gourd selections of all colors and varieties, goat feeding, and some seriously good pumpkin ice cream. When finding this gem, my closest friends and I were able to meet and speak with the owner of the patch, directing us through his business process and goals and giving us a full tour. That tour even included a hayride around the property–what an unforgettable and personalized experience! If you’re ever in the area, visit Harvest Hill and encounter the friendly culture and abundance of fall activities.

The Shenandoah Valley is truly a hidden gem of Virginia, with its brilliant landscapes and breathtaking mountain views waiting to be explored. Spending my time in this area, I’vel found that these lesser-known spots provide the perfect escape to reconnect with nature and experience the valley's peaceful charm in its purest form. Next time you're craving an outdoor adventure, take a detour and explore these tucked-away treasures of the Shenandoah Valley!
